“I am looking forward to visitors viewing this exciting display of photographs taken by and of Black people,” said Jade Powers, Harn Curator of Contemporary Art. Posing Beauty examines contemporary understandings of beauty by framing the notion of aesthetics, race, class and gender within art, popular culture and political contexts. In the exhibition works of photography, video, fashion and advertising will challenge the relationship between beauty and art by examining the representation of beauty and different attitudes about aesthetics. Throughout the history of Western art and image-making, beauty has been idealized and challenged, and the relationship between beauty and art has become increasingly complex within contemporary art and popular culture. More than 100 works of art by more than 45 artists and photographers will explore the ways in which African and African American beauty has been represented in historical and contemporary contexts. The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida is bringing to Gainesville the nationally-touring exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture.
She resides in North Carolina and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy. And a terrible fate that threatens to destroy them both. Full Synopsis A young woman with a secret. While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting-but equally gratifying-life of a wife, mother, and author. A thrilling and bloody paranormal romance novel, The Vampire Heir is a stunning new adult fantasy featuring a dark and mysterious vampire prince and a strong heroine. Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers, republished in 2015 Book: Hurry Up, Houdini!: Magic Tree House #50 Only, he lost, and the Dark Lord took over and has been ruling with an iron fist for a thousand years. A thousand years ago, the prophesied hero from lore rose up to overthrow a great and terrible evil. What if the Dark Lord won? What if, in the final climactic moments, he killed the hero and took over the world? I wanted to take the standard fantasy story I’d read a dozen times, that of a young peasant hero who went on a quest to defeat a Dark Lord, and turn it on its head. The second idea was to write a story about a world where the good guys lost. I wanted to tell the story of how their different magics and abilities worked together for them to pull an incredible caper. The first was that of a heist story, like Sneakers or Ocean’s Eleven involving a gang of gentlemen thieves who each had a distinctive magic power. I came into this book with two big ideas for the plot. With the success of "Mexican Gothic" and other titles, Silvia Moreno-Garcia has expanded her offerings, including this one, "Certain Dark Things."ĭomingo, the protagonist, is a garbageman in Mexico City he likes stories about vampires. This book was originally published a few years ago and went out of print. “With dark and delicious elegance, Moreno-Garcia delivers a satisfyingly bloody vampire story with a tantalizing twist.” - The Globe and Mail "One hopes that return visits to this urban fantasy world are in the offing." - New York Times As a novel, it’s fantastic: honest, wrenching, compassionate, and brutal." - Tor.com "Moreno-Garcia’s characters are vivid and compelling, as is her prose. "With Certain Dark Things, Silvia Moreno-Garcia demonstrates that there is always more to be done with familiar figures such as the vampire, and that in the hands of a talented writer, the creatures can rise to new (un)life." - Locus I love to see compelling new takes on vampires, and C ertain Dark Things succeeds beautifully. "All the characters in this book are as sharply realized as the city in which they live and fight. “The Mexican setting is a huge part of the allure of this new novel from Moreno-Garcia, as are the fascinating varieties of vampires she sets forth.” - Library Journal, starred review "Confirms that Moreno-Garcia is an author to watch.”- Publishers Weekly “ Certain Dark Things is arguably the vampire novel for the 21st century.”” - New York Journal of Books We talked about how there isn’t always a “right” way to do something and it is more important to be creative. We had a great conversation as a class about not giving up and always trying our best. After I read the story with my class during the first day, we discussed the author’s central message. I taught this interactive read-aloud for 4 days in my classroom. This is such an important lesson for our students to learn at the beginning of the year. The boy’s younger sister helps him learn to think “ish-ly.” She also helps him focus on his creativity rather than getting things just right. This is a wonderful story about a creative boy named Ramon, who loves to draw until he is teased by his older brother for the way his pictures look. REYNOLDS An Interactive Read-Aloud Lesson Plan The novel’s ending is particularly startling-a memorable final note in this cogent examination of marital infidelity and betrayal. Cheek does a good job with his cast Henry and Effie are finely drawn and their slide from innocence starkly depicted. His need is insatiable, but her unreasonable demands force him to make promises he cannot keep. Henry’s guilt is quickly rationalized as he carelessly surrenders his conscience to his sexual obsession of Alma. This debut novel by Chip Cheek is about seduction and sex, as well as the scandal, sorrow, and reverberating effects of betrayal. Book Summary A mesmerizing debut novel by Chip Cheek, Cape May explores the social and sexual mores of 1950s America through the eyes of a newly married couple from the genteel south corrupted by sophisticated New England urbanites. The trio’s bawdy, vulgar drunkenness fascinates the newlyweds, especially Henry, who is charmed by Clara and sexually seduced by Alma. Clara is a free-spirited, wealthy socialite, Max is her bodybuilder lover, and Alma is Max’s cunning younger half sister. Just kids, they are naive and unprepared for their meeting with three worldly hedonists who introduce them to booze, lust, and sexual obsession. Henry, 20, and Effie, 18, are young, virginal newlyweds from rural Georgia on their honeymoon in Cape May, N.J., in 1957, arriving in the off-season of September, when it’s largely deserted. Cheek’s strong debut is a psychodrama that shows just how easily people can be manipulated. This is the quintessential American story, encompassing race, class, wealth, sex, music, religion, and personal transformation.
